User centered navigation for the Hartstichting

Hartstichting.nl has multiple goals: to inform patients and their families about diseases, their causes and treatments; to inform the public about prevention; and to raise money for research.

They executes a user test to validate the user experience and found that there were many usability issues. They’ve asked us to redesign the site to better support users to find relevant information.

MY ROLE

UX lead, user research, interaction design, user testing, technical design

Background

The digital agency I worked for was tasked with rebuilding the Hartstichting website—an ideal opportunity to enhance its usability and create a more intuitive experience. Over time, the Hartstichting had created a lot of valuable content, but the previous content structure was no longer effective in helping users find information easily.

As the design lead, I was responsible for overseeing the design process and collaborating closely with a strategist, data analyst, lead developer, and visual designer.

My personal achievements:

  • Restructured the content in a collaborative session with the client
I organized and led a content strategy session with Hartstichting’s product owner and content team. In one day, we analyzed the existing structure and user data to identify areas for improvement, ultimately creating a more focused, user-centered content structure that better aligned with user needs.

  • I validated the new navigation and page structure with real users
I conducted usability tests with 12 heart patients to validate the redesigned navigation and page structure. Within a week, I developed a test plan, built a prototype, facilitated user testing sessions, and analyzed the insights. These findings directly informed the final design, ensuring it addressed users’ needs effectively.

PROCESS

We followed the Triple Diamond process throughout this project, guiding our approach from discovery to release. In the first diamond, we focused on understanding Hartstichting’s organizational goals, target audience, and business objectives for their website. The second diamond was dedicated to restructuring the content into a user-centered format, ensuring that information was accessible and intuitive. Finally, the third diamond focused on refining the design and overseeing the website’s development, aligning the visual and functional aspects to best meet user needs.
